The only thing that matters is what God said in His Word. Everyone seems to create their own theology based on what they choose to believe and not believe and forget that the foundation is supposed to be on the Bible. It's not up to you to decide WHAT you believe. The WHAT is already laid out in the Bible. The question is WILL you believe?

Example: Some people believe that God lives in all creation. FALSE! God CREATED the trees, sun, stars, grass, etc but He doesn't live IN those inanimate objects. The only being that God lives in is us. God told us this in the Bible. In Genesis we also see that He gave humans the authority over all of the "things" in the earth. We just do not have authority over people. Why would God give authority over the things if He lived in them? When you start praying to things because you think God lives in them, you are now venturing into idolatry.

Next time you say "Well I believe..." stop yourself and ask, "Where did I get this belief? Did I get it from the Bible or did I come to the conclusion on my own?" If you picked it up on your own, I encourage you to seek God to see what He said about it in His Word and make that the final authority in your life.

Where's The Line?

I would guess that most people have struggled at some time with the following questions:

"Where is the line between being responsible and working in a job that I don't love but pays the bills AND working in a job that I love but doesn't pay the bills?"

"Should I do what I love and worry about the money later?"

"Should I take a job that I don't love so that I can pay the bills?"

Especially right now, these are big questions on everyone's mind. I believe that we need to be responsible for ourselves and our families. If that means taking a job that we don't love but will pay the bills then so be it. I realize that may be a hard pill to swallow but no one said life was going to be easy. One of the many reasons our economy is in such a mess is because people were irresponsible from various angles.

Some were irresponsible in making unethical business decisions for their companies.

Some were irresponsible in giving loans to people who were one paycheck away from disaster.

Some were irresponsible for lying on their loan applications thinking that they were "entitled" to a house even though they couldn't afford it.

Some were irresponsible in spending more than they make.

Here is the painful truth. The American dream cannot be achieved by lying, cheating, stealing or being unethical or immoral. It is also not handed out. It is earned through honesty and hard work.

Now, here's the good news. If you know Jesus, you have a way out from this mess. Jesus told us that if we live by the principles in the Bible, we can enjoy a life of abundance and overflow. We can have all of our needs met so that we have plenty left over to help others. We can work in a job that we love because we don't look to our job to provide for us. We look to God as our Provider and our Source.

However, Jesus also told us that it wouldn't be easy and that it would require consistency and dedication. We have to learn about God's principles and live by God's principles before we will see those wonderful and amazing blessings manifest in our lives. I suppose the question then becomes . . .

"Are you trusting your jobs and your own efforts to supply your needs or are you living by God's principles, implementing His ways of doing things and therefore seeing Him supply your needs?"

Proof That Jesus Was Not Poor

I heard a great message this week that gave Biblical proof that Jesus was not poor. Here's my point of view.

God told us to owe no man anything but to love him. That means we should not be in debt. If we need to use a budget as a practical way to manage our money then that is great. God tells us time and time again to seek wisdom and use wisdom. I believe that when we are good stewards with our money that is being wise and proving ourselves obedient to God.

God also tells us that He will supply all of our needs. Therefore, we don't need to worry about tomorrow. As long as we are seeking God, putting God first, and being obedient, we will see the Blessing manifest in our lives. Once we start seeing the results of faith, we aren't so dependent on the natural around us. We aren't so concerned about what the budget looks like on paper because we know God will supply our needs. This doesn't give us a license to overspend but it does mean we aren't tied to this world's system.

God also tells us that we are to walk by faith and not by sight. This means that we can believe God to provide the money for that item we want to buy. It doesn't mean we go out and buy it before we have the money in hand because that would be incurring debt. However, it does mean that we have a bigger source than our job. God will supply our needs. We stand on God's Word that He will come through on His promises and we will see the money we need. That's called walking by faith.

If you have been challenged in the area of spending money wisely, I encourage you to set up a budget so that you can see on paper where your money is going. However, this doesn't mean that you can't continue to build up your faith and stand on God's Word. Once we prove ourselves with the little things God will bless us with more. Commit today to making wise decisions with your money and watch God bless your obedience and dedication.

Below is a link to my other site which is full of free tips and forms to help you live a debt free lifestyle.
http://debtfreeliving.synthasite.com/

Bible Verses By Topic

I just started a new website that lists Bible verses by topic. This 31 year old woman had $25,000 in credit card debt, $14,000 in student loans, a $12,000 car payment, and a mortgage . . . and only made $2000 a month.

Suze did a great job of confronting this woman who admitted she was living on credit cards. She knew that she didn't have enough cash coming in but didn't want to have to cut back or get another job.

What I think is ridiculous is that this woman could declare bankruptcy and start all over again. No accountability for the mess she created. No responsibility in repaying the loss. I was relieved to at least hear that you can't declare bankruptcy on student loans. There is no way out of that. Bankruptcy may make her life easier but it makes mine harder because someone has to eat that lost money. Now my insurance rates go up and so on because the companies have to cover their losses. Why do people think they are entitled to buy things they don't have money for and then escape the responsibility of paying for it?

I think there needs to be stricter rules on who can get credit cards. At first glance it would appear that it is a person's right to make bad financial decisions and get themselves into trouble. The problem is that there are so many irresponsible people, greedy people, unethical people, and people poorly educated in basic finances that they have now ruined our whole economy. The American dream is earned by hard work, integrity and honesty. The American dream is not handed out for free.

Are You A Warehouse or Distribution Center?

A warehouse is a place where stuff is stored, set aside and accumulated. Do you only donate things that you don’t like anymore or don’t fit?
4. Do you believe that you should get all you can, can what you get, and sit on the can?
5. Do you believe that the money in your account really belongs to God and you are just a steward called to distribute it to those God chooses?
6. Do you enjoy giving things away, even your most prized possessions?
7. Have you noticed that as you give, God always fills your distribution center back up?

A warehouse makes me think of a stagnant pond. Without circulation things begin to die. But a distribution center has a constant flow that brings life. God is always searching for people who will be distribution centers because He wants to use them to bring life to people.

One thing that’s important to note is that before God will start giving you this money, He needs to know that you will be a faithful steward and use it how He desires. To start, He may ask you to buy a simple cup of coffee for someone. Sounds easy, right? However, He then tells you to give it to the lady you don’t like at work. Will you do it out of obedience to God or will you walk away? As we prove ourselves in these little tests He will begin to entrust bigger things to us.

My husband and I often give big tips at restaurants. I love to think about how excited the waitress will be when she picks up the tip after we’ve left and finds it is crazy big. It seems simple but if we learn to hear God in these situations, we will be better able to hear him in bigger situations. I know some people who have given away cars, houses and airplanes because God asked them to. We aren’t there yet but I would love to get there some day.

Here are some verses to look up if you would like to learn more about trusting God to supply your needs so that you can learn to be a distribution center for Him.

Deuteronomy 28, Proverbs 3:9-10, Proverbs 28:27, Isaiah 48:17, Malachi 3:8-11, II Corinthians 9:6-11

Are You Robbing God?

Did you know that we help to determine if we see God's blessing manifest in our lives?

Malachi 3:9-11 tells us that we are robbing God if we don't give the first 10% of our income to Him.

You are cursed with a curse,
For you have robbed Me,
Even this whole nation.
10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse,
That there may be food in My house,
And try Me now in this,”
Says the LORD of hosts,

“ If I will not open for you the windows of heaven
And pour out for you such blessing
That there will not be room enough to receive it.
11 “ And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes,
So that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground,
Nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,”
Says the LORD of hosts;

The reason God demands the first of your income is because where your money is there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:21, Luke 12:34) Tithing is as much an attitude as it is an action. Choosing to faithfully give the first of your income to God shows that you have the right attitude and the right heart condition. You see God as your source and you trust that He will stand by His Word and liberally supply all of your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19)

God doesn't need our money. He simply wants our hearts. One of His greatest desires is to take care of us. He never wanted us to toil for a living. In His kingdom you supply your needs by sowing and reaping. You can't sow apple seeds and expect to see corn in August. That goes against the laws of nature. The same is in the Kingdom of God. You can't withhold your tithes and offerings from God and expect to see a harvest of money. It doesn't work. You will only reap what you sow. If you give in abundance and with a happy heart, God will give back to you good measure, pressed down, shaken together and RUNNING OVER! (Luke 6:38) You can never outgive God. I challenge you to study the verses in the Bible that show how God supplies your needs and then step out in faith begin to sow your financial seeds. Remember, it isn't the amount of the seed. It is the significance of it.

Blessings to you and your family!
Christy

Root Problem With Stimulus Bills

I think one of the root problems with these stimulus bills is that it doesn't fix the underlying problems that got us here. Greed. Mismanagement of personal finances. Irresponsibility. Lack of accountability. People's belief that they are entitled to things.

If people's attitudes and belief systems don't change, we are going to be back in the same predicament when the money runs out. People who were irresponsible, overspent, and abused credit, are probably going to blow any tax credits or other kickbacks on more irresponsible spending.

I especially hate the idea that some people are going to get yearly rewards for paying their mortgage on time. The reward should be that you get to keep your house. As an adult you should be paying your bills on time without a reward. That's called being responsible. This type of "stimulus" is only encouraging those who are working the system instead of getting out there and working to make a living. In addition, those who need this "reward" to pay on time, will probably just short pay other bills to get this extra bonus the government is handing out.

Don't get me wrong. My heart goes out to the responsible people who lost a job or ran into medical issues that caused their bad financial situation. Those people should be helped by family, friends, local churches and ministries, etc. But, a massive stimulus program like these seem to reward the vast majority of people not in this category who carelessly throw their money around and think that because they breath air in our country it gives them a right to certain things. Even if they can't afford it.

The stimulus should be rewarding personal responsibility. This would then encourage others to become responsible so that they too could get the reward. It just seems like these stimulus bills are backwards.

Our New Identity

I believe that the way you see yourself affects how you handle your finances.

If you see yourself as never being able to make ends meet.

If you see yourself as destined for failure because of your past.

If you see yourself as not good enough.

Your actions will follow what you think. So, if you identify with the above statements, then your actions are most likely going to follow. But as Christians, we have a new identity that makes us more than conquerors. We know that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. We know that if we put God first He will take care of us. We know that God supplies all of our needs so we don't have to worry. When we identify with these statements, we are going to start acting as the victorious Christians we were meant to be. And, when we do this our lives will be an example to others who are struggling to find that same hope.

So, my question to you is . . . What are you identifying with?

If you aren't sure how God sees you, I invite you to visit my online study that I call "Living in the Overflow." We are going to be held accountable for EVERY action on the Day of Judgement. Make sure that your vote is something you will stand behind in front of God.

2. Prayerfully consider how Jesus would view each option on the ballot.

3. Don't vote for the person who is most eloquent or most liked. Vote for the one who will allow our country to function the way God intended.

4. Vote the Bible.

5. Don't be short sighted. Make sure you understand the full impact of each candidate's position and where they are trying to take our country.

6. Remember that the Bible tells us to work dilligently as unto the Lord. God does not believe in hand outs. We are to work hard to fulfill our God given assignment and HE will supply all of our needs. No politician can do that.

7. Don't be swayed by the media. They are only telling us what they want us to hear.

8. Your vote matters! If you have to stand in line for a long time, sow it as seed to God. He will make the time up to you.

Last thought . . . For those who think Obama is going to give you a bigger tax cut.

You may see a break in your taxes but businesses are going to incur the cost. As a result, they are going to have to turn around and pass that cost on to you in the price of goods. Or, those business owners (the ones who pay your salary) may decide it costs too much to run a business under Obama's plan and close shop. You may have saved a few dollars on your taxes but you are going to be out a lot more money if you lose your job or the price of food and clothing shoots up.

Please keep the big picture in mind when deciding if the immediate benefit of a few dollars savings in taxes will outweigh the BIG expense of losing a job. There is no such thing and redistributing wealth. If you tax or penalize the rich, they are going to pull back on their investments and that means companies are going to close. We want the rich to keep investing their money in our companies so that we have jobs.

Family Budgeting Part 3

While we are on the topic of expenses, I thought I would share another important tip.

Avoid using estimates in your budgets whenever possible.

For example, let’s say that I think I spend about $100 a month on groceries. But, if I was to pull out my checkbook, credit card statements and receipts, I would know that I actually spend $800 a month. If I was to build my budget based on my “gut feel” or what I think, I am going to be way off. And what is the result of such a big miscalculation? Well, it may mean that I spend too much in another area and then find I don’t have enough to pay for food that month. Some of you may have even found yourself in this exact situation which can be very scary and frustrating.

I know it isn’t fun to gather up all of your exact expenses for an entire year. However, the extra effort is going to pay off in the end because you are going to have a much clearer picture of where your money is being spent. In turn, this knowledge is going to help you to make better financial decisions and good decisions are what will put you onto the path of financial freedom!

Family Budgeting Part 2

So, how did you do on your list of expenses? Did you get everything?

I realize your instinct may be to exclude certain things because “they don’t count.” (That’s how I always feel when I list how much I spend on clothes. Yikes!) However, you are only hurting yourself if you do this.

In order to figure out how to get out of a debt situation, you need an accurate and realistic picture of where your money is spent. If you leave things out you will get frustrated in the end when you are still spending more than you make.

Here are a few more items that I forgot to include that you’ll want to put in your list.

All outstanding loans including second mortgages, home loans, tuition loans, loans to family members, etc.

Trash Removal

Home Maintenance (painting, furnance filters, salt, etc.)

Furniture and Decorations

Life Insurance

Disability Insurance

Veterinarian

Pet Food & Toys

Attorney Fees

Child Support

Payments on Liens or Judgements

Dry Cleaners

More Supplies (Detergent, Fabric Softener, Stain Remover)

Charities and Donations

Postage

Health Club

Child Care

Please feel free to share any other expenses I may have left out.

Family Budgeting Part 1

So what is the definition of debt? I would say that debt is the result of spending more money than what you have on hand.

Being debt free could therefore be defined as not owing anyone money because you have paid for everything in your possession.

One of the first steps in becoming debt free is to determine what you spend money on. I encourage you to make a list of all of your expenses for the past year. To help you make your list, below are some categories to keep in mind:

MortgageCar

Payment 1

Car Payment 2

House Insurance

Car Insurance

Health Insurance

Doctor Visits

Prescription Medicine

Over the counter medicine

Groceries

“Eating out” Expenses

Education Expenses (tuition, books, supplies, fees)

Gas for Cars, Lawn Mowers, Snow Blowers

Car Maintenance (i.e. Oil Changes, tune ups, etc)

Parking Expenses

Clothing & Accessories

All Cards & Gifts (Birthdays, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Just Because, etc.)

Household Supplies (paper towels, napkins, food containers, foils and wraps, plastic bags, cleaning supplies, large storage containers, gift wrap containers, etc.)

Personal Supplies (bar soap, shampoo, conditioner, hair products, feminine hygiene, lotion, deoderant, makeup, toothpaste, tooth brush, etc.)

Vacations (Airfare, airplane food, hotel, rental car, luggage, gifts, momentos, etc.)

Utilities (water, gas, electric)

Phones (landlines and cell phones)

Cable TV

Internet

Purchasing Checks from Bank

Haircuts, Manicures, Pedicures

Tithes and Offerings

Subscriptions (magazines, newspaper, internet)

Entertainment (movie theater visits, movie rentals, car shows, museums, concerts, special events, concession purchases, books, CD’s, DVD’s, etc.)

Recreational Toys (motor homes, snowmobiles, sleds, skis, four wheelers, motorcycles, campers, boats, trailers, maintenance fees, storage fees, etc)

Please note that the little things add up and can really put you over the edge so don’t forget items such as your morning coffee from Starbucks, the daily newspaper you grab from the checkout lane, and your afternoon snack at the vending machine.

Which Debt Do I Pay First? (Part 2)

The last post gave a basic loan example to get us started. Let's make it more realistic today with the following example.

Loan 1 - $15,000. 10% interest. $15,000 x .10 = $1500 in interest payments each month.

Loan 2 - $5000. 5% interest. $5000 x .05 = $250 in interest payments each month.

Loan 3 - $5000. 20% interest. $5000 x .20 = $1000 in interest payments each month.

If I had extra money to put against the principle on a loan, which one would I want to put it against? My initial reaction would be to say loan 3. The reason is that I am paying the most in interest for each dollar I borrow on that loan. How do I figure that?

Loan 1 1500/15000 = I pay 10 cents per dollar borrowed
Loan 2 250/5000 = I pay 05 cents per dollar borrowed
Loan 3 1000/5000 = I pay 20 cents per dollar borrowed

Of course, another way of looking at this is to pay down Loan 1 because you are paying the most each month on that one.

Another option to consider is to use a lower interest rate loan to pay off the higher interest rate loans. You just need to make sure that there aren't any "set up fees" or other charges that will end up costing you more.

God is the ultimate "get out of debt" solution. This made me realize that everyone may not understand the impact of paying interest on a loan. I like examples so let’s use one for this.

Debt 1 - Owe $10,000. 5% interest rate. $10,000 x .05 = $500 interest payment every month.

Debt 2 - Owe $10,000. 10% interest rate. $10,000 x .10 = $1000 interest payment every month.

Debt 3 - Owe $10,000. 20% interest rate. $10,000 x .20 = $2000 interest payment every month.

Did you notice that the higher the interest rate, the higher the monthly payment? I used the same loan amount so that you could plainly see the affect of different interest rates on what you have to pay each month.

So, let’s say the $10,000 loan was for a car. On top of paying off the $10,000 which was the cost of the car, you are also going to have find an extra $500 a month at a simple 5% interest rate. But, if you have a 20% interest rate, you now have to find an extra $2000 a month. Ouch! At that rate you will have paid $10,000 in interest after only 5 months. That’s what the car costs!

Hopefully these little examples have given you a clearer picture about how interest rates affect what you pay on a loan. Check back soon for more tips.

Debt Free Living Starts With Your Thoughts

If you are serious about getting yourself out of debt, you need to take a serious look at your mindset. How you think will determine what you do. If you believe that your family has always been in debt and will always be in debt . . . well . . . you have pretty much sealed your own fate. Your actions will follow what you think.

For example, let’s say you are an earth lover and think that SUV’s are evil. They guzzle gas and polute the atmosphere. Well, if that’s what you believe (i.e. think) then I highly doubt you are going to go buy an SUV tomorrow. That action would go against what you think.

It’s the same with debt. If you think that you can’t get out of debt, then you won’t act the way it’s necessary to get you out of debt. It’s really that simple.

So how do you change your thoughts?

First, figure out what you think about the most. If you are constantly worrying about debt then worry and fear are foremost in your mind. Did you know that worry is fear about something that may never happen? Don’t waste time worrying about debt. Let’s start doing things to take charge of our lives and break free from that curse.

Let’s try something. Make a list of what your life would look like without debt. How would you feel? Relieved? Set free? Would you sleep better at night? Would your health improve? Remember that picture because you want to use that as motivation to do the next step.

What is the next step? Starting making decisions that line up with that picture. You get to choose whether you want to stay under the burden and pressure of debt and financial obligations or if you want to live in freedom. The control is in your hands and only you can make it happen.

Thanks for letting me share my thoughts. I’ll expand further on this area in another post. Please take a minute and share your thoughts with us!

Freedom From Debt
http://www.keepinglifesimple.net/Freedom_From_Debt.html

Simplify, get organized and learn to live the good life that God planned for you!
www.OverflowLiving.com

Intro to Christian Debt Free Living

Have you ever said any of the following?

“I wish I could go further into debt.”

“I love the pressure of knowing I can’t pay my bills this month.”

“I enjoy having collection agencies call my house.”

“I love living paycheck to paycheck with never enough to get ahead.”

I’m going to go out on a limb and assume you said no. So why do so many people fall further into debt?

I’m not a financial analyst nor do I have a degree in finance, but I believe a big reason is lack of knowledge and poor decisions. Of course there are other things that also factor in such as illness, job loss, etc., but even then you shouldn’t have to live in poverty.

I look forward to sharing with you practical tips and Biblical solutions that will help you to get out of debt and also get ahead.
